Gandhi Bhawan (Hyderi Manzil)
The Historic Sanctuary where Mahatma Gandhi Restored Peace to Bengal

Profile Overview
Gandhi Bhawan (originally known as Hyderi Manzil) is a heritage building located in Beleghata, just 1.6 km from Sealdah Station. In August 1947, as India gained independence amidst partition riots, Mahatma Gandhi stayed at this mansion and undertook a historic fast-unto-death to restore communal harmony in Calcutta. The house has since been converted into a museum housing Gandhi's personal belongings, historical photographs, and peace murals.
The History of the 1947 Fast
As riots broke out in Calcutta during partition, Mahatma Gandhi arrived at Hyderi Manzil on August 13, 1947. He refused security and chose to stay in this simple brick house. When rioting escalated on August 31, he began a fast-unto-death. On September 4, leaders of all communities surrendered weapons at his feet, and the violence ceased. Lord Mountbatten famously remarked: "What the 50,000-strong boundary force could not do in the Punjab, the one-man boundary force did in Bengal."
The Restoration & Exhibits
The building was fully restored by the Government of West Bengal in 2018. It hosts galleries containing the thin mattress and pillow Gandhiji slept on, his wooden sandals, pocket watch, and letters, alongside glass cases showing the weapons surrendered to him.
